Abstract The complexity of modern systems requires a holistic approach to modeling and simulation during the design phases. This often includes an integrated model of the overall system (architecture, function, and environment) as well as a link-up of computer-aided design tools, because there are many occasions in which there are aspects of the system that cannot be described in one tool. The paper introduces a converter program that bridges the gap between a CAD tool and a system design tool. Non-functional information that is relevant for the simulation is extracted from the three-dimensional CAD model and automatically inserted into the behavioral model of the system design tool. The latter is used for performance evaluation and indirect design optimization.
