Abstract In recent years, the trend of satellite system design is to become more flexible and efficient by miniaturization and cutting the costs of the satellites. In the field of Earth observations, high accuracy, agile ann timely observations are prominent as mission requirements. In the field of satellite communications/broadcasting, the customer desiring operations with sovereignty is increasing. NEC has developed 500 kg class small satellites, OICETS for on-orbit validation of LEO-GEO optical inter-satellite communications and MDS-1 for on-orbit evaluation of commercial-off-the-shelf parts as well as small scientific satellites. In this paper, an advanced small satellite bus now under development is described. Then, the feasibility of a small GEO broadcasting satellite and an Earth observation satellite using this advanced small satellite is discussed.
