The rapid growth of motorized private vehicles in the cities is the cause of many negative externalities. There is an imminent need for promoting sustainable modes of transport to check the growth of motorized vehicles. For this, the government has acknowledged the potential of bicycle as a mode of transport and launched several campaigns to promote its usage in the cities. To support these initiatives, it is essential that the users’ requirements and expectations from a bicycle-friendly environment are understood, and the required infrastructural development is carried out. This study aims to do so by identifying the major factors affecting bicycle usage and capturing user perception on these factors through an importance survey in Patna. In the survey, the respondents assign a rating to each factor, depending on its importance in deciding their willingness to use bicycle, on a 10-point scale. The collected data is analyzed using RIDIT to determine the ranking of factors as per the respondents. It is found that the health benefits of cycling, route visibility, road surface quality and segregation from motorized vehicles are the most important factors for the users. Further, the cost factor, social status associated with bicycles, segregation from non-motorized vehicles and noise pollution are perceived as the least important factors.
