This paper shows how the length of the central skeg influences the manoeuvrability of passenger vessels, both at high and low speeds. The impact of the skeg is quantified and discussed based on the results of manoeuvring model tests and CFD calculations for two test-cases, a ferry and a yacht. It is shown what are the advantages and disadvantages on the hydrodynamic design of the ship when the skeg length is increased. Among the topics investigated are the directional stability, the turning and yaw checking abilities, the heel angles in turn and the low-speed manoeuvring.
