In order to achieve the highest bidirectional traffic efficiency in the arterial system, the four possible arrival situations when the team arrive at the downstream intersection are analyzed, namely, “head and tail are blocked”, “head is blocked and tail is unblocked”, “head is unblocked and tail is blocked” and “head and tail are both unblocked”. By plotting the delay map, the geometric relationship is used to derive the expressions of the delay and the number of stops varying with offset in the arterial road system. Then the offset optimization model considering both the head and tail of the team is established. Finally, the model is applied to four adjacent signal intersections in Miyun County, Beijing, and compares with the traditional algebraic method. Based on the VISSIM simulation platform, the intersection simulation is carried out, and the data shows that the result of the model makes the delay and the number of stops decrease significantly. Compared with the traditional algebraic method, the optimization effect of the bidirectional optimization model on the traffic efficiency of the intersection is obvious.
