Abstract Each rechargeable battery irretrievably loses storage capacity over time. A phenomenon that everyone knows from home electronics: For example, a tablet’s usable capacity of 80 % after 500 cycles is considered normal, 80% after 1,000 full cycles is quite good. The lithium ion batteries in electric vehicles also lose capacity over time. The result is a permanent reduction of range and perceivable value loss for electric cars. In contrast to vehicles with an internal combustion engine, electric cars do not need a gear box, clutch, converter, gas tank, dynamo, and many other components. Therefore, only little mechanical deterioration is possible. According to studies, repairing ecars is on average up to 35% less expensive than the maintenance of cars with an internal combustion engine. Electric cars can have low maintenance cost and a very long life. However, the aging of the drive battery significantly influences the magnitude of this advantage.
