There is a growing need in the automotive industry for a sensor with the capability to sense ferrous metal targets in ignition/fuel system timing and antilock braking systems. Several new approaches using magnetic sensing are currently being studied. Three of the major methods being evaluated are differential, AC type, and DC type. Solid-state technology is used in each of these techniques. This technology allows for the use of internal electronics necessary for signal conditioning. The signal will then be compatible with most microprocessor controls. The following paper compares differential, AC type, and DC type magnetic sensing approaches to a definition of “ZERO SPEED SENSING.”
