Abstract Using information from conformation-predicting algorithms and X-ray data, a possible mode of structural evolution from an ancestral molecule of about 28 residues to bacterial ferredoxins and rubredoxins is suggested. The possibility of a further evolutionary pathway leading to flavodoxinlike proteins is also indicated.
