American cities have seen a resurgence in public transit, construction, expansion, and restoration over the past decade. Metropolitan areas with extensive legacy systems are not only expanding, but agencies recognize large capital and maintenance costs are needed to reverse trends of deferred maintenance programs and equipment needs, while those with newer systems are looking to increase the areas served by their infrastructure. Where some form of improved mass transit hub is proposed, development, including office retail and shopping, often follows. Transportation engineers and planners can be prepared: First, there is that ongoing shift from trip generation strategies to understand not only vehicle trips but person trips. Second, there is the need to embrace the change. Third, you should be responsive to calls for alternative treatments.
