In April 1980, a Space Shuttle Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) was destroyed in a flash fire during a functional test in the Johnson Space Center's crew systems laboratory. During this lecture, retired Exploration Portable Life Support System (xPLSS) Operations Manager Joseph T. Nowetner Jr. discussed what happened to cause this failure, what safety message resulted from it, lessons learned from these mistakes, and how to leverage earned knowledge.
