The staffing of a local traffic safety program should be accomplished by coordinating individual program standard needs with the overall objectives of the community's traffic safety plan. The local traffic safety coordinator should assume the key responsibility in this effort. With the cooperation of the community traffic safety organization, the coordinator should help formulate a program plan which surveys the community's needs in highway safety recruitment, education, training, financial compensation, work schedules and related considerations. Implementation of the plan will require leadership from the coordinator as well as from local elected officals and the cooperation of traffic safety program administrators. Through their efforts, an effective traffic safety team characterized by professionalism and motivation can be created. (Author)
