The basic objective of the work reported herein was to provide a braoder technology base to support the development of a medium STOL Transport (MST) airplane. This work was limited to the application of the externally blown flap (EBF) powered lift concept. The technology of EBF STOL aircraft has been investigated through analytical studies, wind tunnel testing, flight simulator testing, and design trade studies. The results obtained include development of methods for the estimation of the aerodynamic characteristics of an EBF configuration, STOL performance estimation methods, safety margins for takeoff and landing, wind tunnel investigation of the effects of varying EBF system geometry parameters, configuration definition to meet MST requirements, trade data on performance and configuration requirement variations, flight control system mechanization trade data, handling qualities characteristics; piloting procedures, and effects of applying an air cushion landing system to the MST.
