The first Project FIRE flight experiment was launched at 1642 hours, 25.536 seconds EST on April 14, 1964 from Complex 12 at the John F. Kennedy Space Center. The planned trajectory and velocity were achieved, and impact was within I8 miles of the planned impact point, about I50 miles southeast of Ascension Island. The reentry package achieved a velocity of 37,890 feet per second at an altitude of 400,000 feet. Real time telemetry records were excellent, as expected, up to the point of blackout. Highly satisfactory data covering approximately two-thirds of the reentry time period was transmitted by delay time telemetry upon emergence from blackout. Al I primary objectives of the FIRE I experiment were achieved. As soon as data reduction and studies are completed, the results will be made available in NASA technical publications. The enclosed post-launch report is a final report supplementing information contained in the FIRE I Mission Operation Report No. R-714-64-01 dated March 31, 1964, and should be filed immediately after the cover page of that report.
