The main aim of the project was to conduct an economic feasibility test of a multiple-method fishing operation. The 50 ft. ALOFAGA was used to conduct this test. Data from the local 'dory' (or small craft) fleet were also collected and monitored as a progress indicator of commercial fisheries development. The four main objectives of the project were: (1) develop an economically-sound 'medium-class' fishing unit for year-round operation; (2) conduct live bait skip-jack fishing trials with cultured baitfish; (3) increase productivity of local small boat fleet through training and fleet liaison; and (4) provide training to local fishermen in the operation and maintenance of 'medium-class' fishing vessels.
