This report documents the evaluation of the National Airspace System (NAS) performance for year 2005. The National Airspace System Performance Analysis Capability (NASPAC) Simulation Modeling System (SMS) was used to simulate the future air traffic control (ATC) system. Airport airfield and technological improvements expected to be completed by year 2005 were included in this analysis. Future air traffic demand was based on the 1993 Terminal Area Forecasts (TAF). The study results indicate that most of the delay in the system for year 2005 is caused by airfield capacity limitations. Three-fourths of the delay is related to ground operations or ground manifestation of airspace congestion. About 45 percent of the total delay is related to ground operations or ground manifestation of airspace congestion. About 45 percent of the total delay is attributed to adverse weather. Airports that have no future airfield improvements planned show the highest delay estimates.
