ACRP Research Report 206: Guidebook on Effective Land Use Compatibility Planning Strategies for General Aviation Airports provides an analysis of various state and local airport zoning laws and their effectiveness in protecting airport viability and safety. While there is no one strategy that is effective for all airports, all airports need to be proactive about land use compatibility. This guidebook will help airport operators understand the various tools for ensuring compatible land use and how best to communicate land use compatibility needs to government decision makers and land use professionals (among other stakeholders). Land use compatibility around airports is an important element in allowing aircraft to expeditiously and safely traverse the national airspace through local, general aviation airports. The effectiveness of local zoning and ordinances is key to reducing compatibility conflicts from development projects proposed around the airport. Airport managers must ensure that they have a critical role in their communities to educate stakeholders on the importance of not allowing flight hazards to be built.
