Recently, high-powered and large sized LNG carriers have been built in MHI. Hydrodynamic design and development of ship forms for those ships have aimed at higher propulsive performance, lower level of vibration excitation, better manoeuvring capability, and improvement of prediction of ship motion for reliable design of ship structure and cargo tanks. Major problems encountered in the develoment are: (1) restrictions from shallow draft and large diameter propeller absorbing high main engine output, (2) severe design contraints due to cargo tank arrangement, adjustment of draft and trim, stability etc., (3) design of rudder and effective steering aids such as side thruster, for proper steering capability under severe wind and seas, and (4) reliable prediction of impact load due to sloshing in cargo tanks. This paper outlines the results of investigations made on propulsive performance, propeller, manoeuvrability and seakeeping qualities of large LNG carriers. Those investigations were integrated into successful design of the ships of this kind with excellent performance. In addition to the above, mention is made also on the LPG carriers built in MHI from the viewpoint of ship hydrodynamic design.
