Technical and financial aspects of the MAGE Orbital Propulsion Unit (MOPU) study are presented. The propulsion unit is dedicated to allow the Exosat satellite to be launched by Ariane, based on the MAGE III solid propellant motor. The Exosat satellite was originally planned to be launched in 1979 by means of a Thor-Delta 2914. The reprogramming of the project leads to a launch at the end of 1980 or the beginning of 1981. Since the first operational Ariane launch could be made in December 1980, the Exosat mission could be autonomously carried by ESA provided Exosat is designed to withstand the Ariane launching conditions. Topics dealt with include study context and objectives; performance and mission analysis; MOPU description; management plan; development and integration plan; product assurance plan and overall planning. Technical notes on mutation dampers, thermal behavior, and structural analysis are also included.
