To improve the correspondence between the performance indices for flight control system synthesis and the (dynamic) handling qualities criteria on the one hand and pilot opinion on the other, it is suggested that a generalized quadratic cost function be determined by least squares fitting to pilot ratings. It is shown by an illustrative example taken from literature that this approach can lead to a considerable improvement. (Author)
