The essay views the prospects of Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems (IVHS) technology from the perspective of human factors psychology. This viewpoint stresses the need for user-centered design in order to optimize the potential benefits and to avoid unintended difficulties with new technology. Three examples of the user-centered approach to IVHS are presented to illustrate the advantage of considering drivers' abilities and informational requirements at an early stage in design.
