The study is an updated version of the 1979 Port Handbook for Estimating Marine Terminal Cargo Handling Capability. The handbook provides a method of estimating the annual cargo throughout capability of ports and terminals in the U.S., based on standardized berthing modules. Modules were developed for each cargo transfer mode, such as general cargo, containers, dry bulk, and liquid bulk cargo. A unique feature of the methodology is that it provides three different levels of capacity estimation. The level of estimation is dependent on the user's objective and the availability of data. For users who need a general estimate, the handbook provides a typical annual cargo throughput figure for each terminal module. Other users requiring more detailed capacity estimates can apply the methodology using actual terminal data. This methodology has several potential applications. It can be used in planning for new terminal facilities. For existing facilities, it can assist in developing expansion plans or in evaluating current performance.
