A previous four-year study of fatal automobile accidents has shown that the steering assembly-the column and steering wheel rim--ranked high as one of the major causes of fatzal and serious injuries to drivers in automobile crashes. These studies indicated that if the driver's torso would strike a nonpenetrating or energy-absorbing structure rather than a ridge one, less force would be transmitted to the vital thoracic and abdominal organs, and a reduction in the number of fatalities and a decrease in the severity of injuries sustained could be anticipated.
