One of NASA's objectives, as directed by legislation and national policy during the past decade, is to foster the participation and capital investment by U.S. firms in the commercial development of space. To that end, timely, frequent access to space to test, demonstrate or evaluate techniques or processes with commercial potential, is essential to maintain viable commercial development programs. NASA's Office of Advanced Concepts and Technology (OACT) support of these objectives includes the implementation of a significant level of flight activity. This document provides prelaunch reports documentation on four commercial development of space payloads manifested on STS-62. These four payloads emanate from NASA Centers for the Commercial Development of Space (CCDS). The CCDSs are competitively selected non-profit consortia of industry, academia, and government partners, that foster private sector participation and investment in the commercial development of space. The payloads developed in this program primarily reflect the interests and initiatives of private industry partners and are not focused on 'spin offs' from technology developed to satisfy other NASA objectives or needs. Through creative and enterprising partnerships with industry, the CCDS's, and also the NASA Centers involved, continue to be key facilitators for U.S. industry involvement in commercial development of space activities, encouraging and supporting new and ongoing space-related ventures, and research and development advancements that promise significant economic benefits. Note that the payload suffix numbers included on the cover and the objectives page reflect the payload number as shown in the Shuttle manifest. This is the number of times that this particular payload configuration has flown as a Shuttle secondary payload. The actual number of times that this payload type has flown in support of commercial development of space objectives is indicated in the narrative for each payload.
