The field test program reported on herein was conducted by the U.S. Army Mobility Equipment Research and Development Center with technical assistance from the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station. The objectives of the program were to (a) make a quantitative evaluation of the mobility characteristics of three rough terrain forklift trucks when operating over sand beaches, (b) validate or revise the current mobility prediction formulas to cover larger, heavier, and more powerful vehicles, and (c) establish specific design relations for vehicles being developed for materials handling, which will ensure the attainment of the required mobility. Maximum drawbar pull, maximum slope negotiable, and towed motion resistance tests were conducted on the beach backshore and dune areas.
