Conflict analysis was used to analyze seven study sites to evaluate a two-way left-turn lane (TWLTL) operation compared to that in roadway sections with no turn lane and also those with a Z-pattern median lane. Other operational factors in TWLTL including truck behavior, pedestrian behavior, driving under adverse weather, night operation, and capacity considerations were also analyzed. TWLTL were found to be an effective treatment under a wide variety of turning and mainline volumes on arterial highways with mid-block intersections.
