A system for pavement macrotexture measurement was evaluated. The system utilizes the principle of depolarization of reflected polarized light, where the degree of depolarization is a function of the pavement macrotexture. In this report, the output of the system, the depolarized light number (DPN), is compared with other measures of pavement texture: sand-patch mean texture depth (MTD), British pendulum number (BPN), and outflow meter time (OFT) for 22 asphalt concrete sites and 5 portland cement concrete sites. The prediction of texture data from simultaneous measurements of ribbed and blank-tire skid resistance data was investigated.
