Friction drives have shown good results in diesel crabs under normal operating conditions. However, problems occurred with rail cants > 20 ton and even with smaller rail cants if the rails were soiled. For this reason, an auxiliary gear drive was installed in the diesel crab, and the rails were toothed on both sides in the critical sections. Preliminary operating experience of the new system is reported. (ERA citation 10:012175)
