The work of the Spacecraft Data Handling Section of the Space Department over the decade 1963-1973 is reviewed. The reasoning behind the progressive development leading up to a modular pulse code modulation system is indicated with emphasis on the problems of procuring reliable electronic components. Systems of soldered constructions using conventional components and integrated circuits and a thick film assembly method known as multi-chip integration were developed. Orbit performance of the first three UK satellites, Ariel 3 and 4 and Prospero, provided the basis for these last developments. (Author)
