Detection Acoustique des Helicopteres Experimentations (Acoustic Detection of Helicopters: Experiments)
Experiments were performed with a view to the development of acoustic helicopter detection systems. Feasibility validation experiments of a system show that a signal to noise ratio of 20 dB is obtained, and that disadvantages are the effects of wind and rain as well as the fact that the antenna has to be pointed manually to the helicopter. The testing of different industrial acoustic detection systems shows that the detection range is at least 6 km, depending on the weather conditions, and that wind significantly affects the acoustic signal emitted by the helicopter.
