An investigation was made of the dynamic characteristics of the satellite Dial after separation from the last stage in order to determine the reasons for abrupt nutations and their good damping. After a summary of the theory of nutation motion of rigid bodies, probable errors during separation are discussed and the equipment on board that might have caused the damping is pointed out. The telemetry data of the attitude measurement system are analysed and the damping effects of the batteries determined by an experiment. (Author)
