The report treats the potential built-in-test description in three fundamental descriptive areas: Test Depth, Test Control and Test-Results Display; these areas are broken down into fundamental descriptive elements. The descriptive elements are evaluated for their sensitivity to circumstances surrounding the procurement and use of the avionic equipment in which the built-in test is incorporated. These elements, or design-influencing factors, fall within four major determinant areas. The manner in which the determinants affect the built-in-test descriptors is examined, and preferred built-in-test descriptions are discussed for combinations of determinants. A procurement situation involving the procurement of integrated avionics for carrier aircraft is used as a basis for describing suggested built-in-test performance for contractor-furnished avionics (CFE). Similarly, built-in-test performance description is discussed in the light of procurement of general-use avionic equipment (GFE). (Author)
