A study was made of the ramp driver merging onto an urban freeway in terms of perception of the merging situation and the possible differential effects of environmental conditions upon his gap acceptance/rejection behavior. The study involved photographic recording of actual merging behavior on a ramp on the Long Island Expressway, and correlation of merging behavior with a number of measures of subjective gap size. The various measures of subjective gap size used--43 alternative mathematical expressions--were defined in terms of observable vehicle kinematics of both the ramp and mainstream vehicles. One of the principal interests of the research was to determine the most psychologically effective measures of 'gap size'. A second interest involved the determination of changes in driver behavior (in terms of the most psychologically effective measures of gap size) under varying environmental conditions--weather (dry and wet) and illumination (daylight and illuminated darkness).
