Vehicle characteristics are determined by operating the vehicle on a pavement having a known pavement roughness spectrum and measuring the dynamic tire forces. If the vehicle is then driven over a second pavement having a pavement roughness spectrum similar to the first pavement, the dynamic tire forces predicted using the vehicle characteristics will agree reasonably well with those measured experimentally. Examples are included. A full discussion is included of the problems encountered in undertaking this investigation.
