The principal research objective of this dissertation is to extensively investigate the issue of obtaining real-time road traffic information for the particular applications of transportation telematics that are concerned with coordination of road traffic flows. The first part of Chapter 2 presents an overview of international developments within the field of transportation telematics aimed at coordination of road traffic flows. The second part of Chapter 2 presents an alternative classification of applications of transportation telematics, evolving from an information science approach. In Chapter 3, the authors study possibilities for obtaining real-time road traffic information from a monitoring system exploiting infrastructure based traffic detectors. In Chapter 4, the principles of a novel approach to real-time road traffic montioring are presented. Chapter 5 and 6 both deal with communication aspects of collecting real-time road traffic data through probe vehicles. Chapter 7 and 8 both deal with traffic engineering aspects of collecting real-time road traffic data through probe vehicles. The conclusions of the research reported in this dissertation, as well as the recommendations for further research, are presented in Chapter 9.
