The purpose of the proposed project is to replace an inadequate segment of the existing US-36 roadway in Brown County, Kansas, with a modern freeway facility. In the city of Hiawatha five industrial development sites will not be adversely affected because the proposed improvement bypasses these areas. The proposed improvement will not significantly alter existing fish and wildlife habitats. There are no archeological sites located within the Improvement Corridor. Vehicle emissions are probable adverse environmental effects which cannot be avoided; however, such emissions should not be significantly increased even with increased traffic volumes since proposed vehicle anti-pollution measures should be evident by the time this improvement is constructed. Land severances cannot be avoided, but will be minimized by utilizing section lines for the proposed route. Land required for right of way will be taken from agricultural production.
