The recreational boating business is made up of 19,000 firms directly engaged in making and selling marine products. It provides 350,000 direct, full-time jobs. Retail sales for the industry exceed $4.8 billion and the industry's sizeable and growing exports provide a favorable contribution to the balance of trade. Boating is a middle America recreation involving more than 9 million owner-families. Specific problem areas and planning concepts for coastal zone planning for recreational boating are examined.
