The report is the fifth in a series of reports dealing with the pilot disorientation/vertigo accident problem in Army fixed wing and rotary wing flight operations. Incidence and cost data presented for fiscal year 1971 include a total of 50 major and minor orientation-error accidents (25 of which were fatal), resulting in 65 fatalities, 67 nonfatal injuries, and an over-all aircraft damage cost of $11,404,119. The contribution of rotary wing accidents to this total was 47 accidents (23 of which were fatal), resulting in 62 fatalities, 67 nonfatal injuries, and an over-all aircraft damage cost of $11,191,377.
