The efforts of ESA in developing a unified approach to damage tolerance and fracture control research are outlined. Based on experience gained with Spacelab and Eureca, the ESA Fracture Control Board has defined a set of fracture control requirements applicable to all ESA space systems. The reasoning behind the fracture control requirements is discussed. Examples of applications of these requirements are given. The development of the second space telescope solar array is given as a specific example.
