On April 11,1996, Governor Zell Miller officially opened Georgia's Advanced Transportation Management System (ATMS), inaugurating the States first intelligent transportation system (ITS). Two years earlier, the Federal Highway Administration had selected Atlanta as the site for an ITS demonstration for a number of reasons:the ATMS's capabilities for providing travelers with up-to-the- minute traffic information, Atlantas Transportation Management Center (TMC), and the 1996 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, which would add more than 2 million athletes, coaches, spectators, and other visitors to the citys increasingly congested metropolitan region. The Traveler Information Showcase was closely integrated with the ATMS and operated from the TMC. During the four-month Showcase demonstration-from June to September of 1996- the Federal Highway Administration and the Georgia Department of Transportation demonstrated to the traveling public of Atlanta, Georgia and to the rest of the world the benefits of intelligent transportation system technology. This document, prepared under the sponsorship of the Federal Highway Administration, describes the planning, technical approach, operations, and lessons learned of the Traveler Information Showcase.
