The CD-ROM contains the results of a study performed in 2003 with regards to the importance of intermodal transportation and represents a part of the strategic planning process necessary to place available capital funds where they will produce the greatest return in the shortest time. In order to do that, Intermodal Mexico asked the assistance of the U.S. Trade and Development Agency for assistance in providing the majority of the funds to conduct this study. The study evaluated all of the major potential intermodal markets on the FERROMEX rail system in terms of the potential freight traffic, available terminal locations, conceptual terminal designs capable of handling both current and future traffic, the estimated costs of those terminals, and the financial feasibility of the various terminal development opportunities. It examined the feasibility of developing, operating, and managing a network of intermodal terminals and associated logistics services in Mexico. It is hoped that by taking advantage of Mexicos expanding economy, it could increase the railroads traffic volume and capture an increased percentage of available domestic and international freight traffic. In order to assess the feasibility of an intermodal network, a firm named Hanson-Wilson conducted the study. This project covered the selection of terminal sites. The development of conceptual designs for phased terminal development, an evaluation of the environmental conditions and potential problems, estimated terminal costs (including operating equipment), and financial analyses of each potential terminal.
