The CONCAP IV-01 payload planned for flight in June 1993 on STS-57, is sponsored by the NASA Office of Advanced Concepts and Technology. CONCAP IV-01 is a commercial development of space, small, Shuttle cargo bay payload developed by the Consortium for Materials Development in Space, a NASA Center for the Commercial Development of Space based at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. The CONCAP IV flight series uses the microgravity environment of space to investigate the growth processes and characteristics of non-linear optical crystals (NLO). Materials with NLO properties are believed to be essential to the development of optical computers by the optoelectronics/photonics industry. For this reason, this work in NLO materials has significant commercial implications. The enclosed Pre-launch Mission Operation Report contains a brief description of the CONCAP IV-01 activity which is co-manifested with, but not a part of, the SPACEHAB-01 activities on STS-57. Inquiries may be directed to the OACT Flight Programs Division.
