The United States Marine Corps is scheduled to replace its AV-8B Harriers and F/A-18 Hornets with the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) starting in 2010. However, given the advent of tactical aviation (TACAIR) integration with the U.S. Navy, it has not been decided if the Marine Corps will buy only the Short-Takeoff Vertical-Landing version (STOVL) or a mixture of STOVL and Carrier Versions (CV) of the JSF. The author contends that the Marine Corps should purchase only the STOVL variant of the JSF due to its ability to offer greater flexibility, long-term savings, and Sea Basing support. Also, purchasing only the STOVL variant will allow the Marine Corps to fulfill its fixed-wing TACAIR requirement.
