The safety belt is considered to be one of the most effective provisions for the protection of vehicle drivers from fatal or severe injury in traffic accidents. A campaign was set up in the province of Friesland to stimulate belt use. The campaign was a combination of police enforcement and activities on information and publicity. The Dutch Institute for road safety research has carried out an evaluation of the campaign and has analyzed the results. During the campaign an increased use of belts was shown and the effect over the longer term was also measurable. Younger male drivers use their belts relatively less. No difference was found on the effects of the campaign with respect to age and sex. The results show that an intensive campaign in which police enforcement and publicity go together, can achieve a notable modification in belt use from which the results are measurable in the middle long term.
