As the first year work program of the 701 Comprehensive Planning Program for Essex County, the Mass Transportation hub of a 5,000,000 person Northeastern New Jersey Metropolitan Region, this Transit Study (as differentiated from the Street and Highway oriented Traffic Study No. 7) is an extensive background source of passenger volume data for trains, subways and buses. Stations are analyzed as to inventory and condition; comparative new stations in other metropolitan areas are also pictured. The report lays emphasis upon Newark and Essex County as the principal hub of transportation for Northern New Jersey. Certain rail and/or automated systems are outlined in various proposals of the text and appendixes. System restructuring is a high priority of the incoming State Administration and of the Essex County Mass Transportation Commission and the County Planning Board. (Author)
