Satellite navigation systems are rapidly becoming a key plank in transport infrastructures. Europe is pressing ahead with work on its own satellite navigation system, in spite of unresolved issues about how it will be financed and managed. Galileo, a joint project of the European Commission and the European Space Agency (ESA), is seen as politically and commercially important in letting Europe break free from reliance on US and Russian military satellite systems (GPS and Glonass). The operation of the Galileo is briefly described.
