Only three-chips vision system prototype "FAVIS" has been developed in order to be low cost and highly reliable processing for practical automotive applications. Prototype FAVIS has three main components, a CMOS image sensor chip, an image processing LSI chip and an single chip equipped with an RISC engine. The feature of FAVIS architecture is a tiny memory which does not have enough capacity to store even one field image data. A new image processing LSI has been designed to overcome the memory restriction and to accelerate process speed of the system. In this paper, the architecture and capabilities of prototype FAVIS are described as a platform for automotive vision systems.
