The excess ratio control of PEM fuel cells systems is investigated in this paper with the use of double loop cascade control structure. In the outer loop, an improved super-twisting control algorithm is proposed which is robust against dynamics and disturbances in UAVs. As for the inner loop, the optimal tracking controller based upon adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) is exploited to adaptively approximate the optimal control policy, where the weights of neural networks are updated real-time. Simulation results are demonstrated with comparison between the traditional cascaded super twisting control scheme and the ADP based scheme.
