Lock and Dam No. 17 will comprise a non-navigable gated dam with three 61- ft-wide by 27-ft-high tainter gates 9.8 miles above the confluence of the Arkansas and Verdigris Rivers, and a 110- by 600-ft lock located about 0 .6 mile east in an excavated, slack-water navigation canal. Two 1:120-scale fixed-bed models, reproducing the upper and lower reaches of the river channel and the slack-water navigation canal, were used to study navigation conditions at the upstream and do>vnstream entrances to the navigation canal, and to determine flow conditions that could be expected near the entrances to the slack-water canal and through existing and proposed bridges and the modifications required to produce satisfactory navigation conditions through the reach. Results of the investigations indicated the following : (a.) Considerable modifications would be required near the upper end of the bypass canal to eliminate hazardous conditions that would be experienced by downbound tows attemptingto enter the canal. (b.) Navigation conditions for downbound tows entering the bypass canal above the lock could be improved by relocating the new U.S. Highway 69 Bridge upstream of the existing bridge and realipning the channel upstream of the canal entrance. (c.) Flow through the old river bend formed by the cutoff upstream of the U.S. Highway 69 Bridge should not be sufficient to affect navigation at the lower end of the cutoff channel. (d.) Modification of the alignment of the proposed bypass canal near its lower end and some modification of the right bank of the river channel would be required to eliminate hazardous conditions for downbound tows leaving the canal. (e.) Piers of the MK&T and KO&G Railroad bridge with 40-ft-diam protective cells upstream should not cause any serious navigation difficulties. (f.) Widening the navigation channel to a minimun width of 300 ft would provide adequate width for two-way traffic and good navigation conditions with modifications developed for the narrmver channel.
