A binding for a recreational board comprises a shock absorbing system to dampen shocks between the board and the rider. The shock absorbing system includes a retainer 5 to retain the leg of a rider and a guide 4 on which the retainer 5 is slidably mounted. By ensuring the retainer 5 can only slide towards/away from the upper face 1C of the board about a single axis, which is preferably non-perpendicular to the upper face of the board, the shock absorbing system inhibits rotational movement of the rider’s leg and does not compromise the rider's ability to shift his/her weight relative to the board in order to control the board's speed and direction. A binding of the invention is consider particularly beneficial for trans-femoral amputee riders as such riders do not have ankle and knee joints that would otherwise dampen shocks and as such are more at risk to spinal damage.
