A vehicle 10 includes a parking assist system that identifies an inclination of vehicle 10 and an angle of wheels 32 relative to a centre-line 34 of vehicle 10. Vehicle 10 also includes a controller 22 that, in response to activation of the vehicle, for example by actuating an ignition switch, and if the inclination β exceeds a first threshold and the steering angle α exceeds a second threshold, adjusts steering angle α to centre wheels 32 relative to centre-line 34. Optionally, the system can stop aligning the wheels if a brake pedal 36 is pushed or if a steering wheel 16 is grabbed, and an alert 38 may be provided when the system is activated. The system may also automatically steer wheels 32 towards or away from a curb 28 if vehicle 10 is deactivated while facing respectively downhill or uphill.
